October 2023
On October 12th, Todd Blyleven was the keynote speaker at an event sponsored by the Fairfield County Trauma Response Team (www.FCTRT.org) in New Canaan, Connecticut.
Todd delivered a speech about his experience at the Las Vegas shooting in 2017, where he transitioned from concert-goer and husband, to a courageous responder in the blink of an eye. He related how he teamed up with off-duty first responders and while under fire, carried victims out towards cover and medical care. Todd’s background being a professional athlete, and son of a Baseball Hall of Famer, you would think Todd was used to celebrity status, however Todd spoke very humbly, from the heart, and explained his new found respect and understanding of first responders.
In the course of Todd’s narrative, he spoke of his path of recovery from the stress and anguish of that night in Nevada. He made mention a couple of times about meeting people with similar experiences and how they have ‘relatable stories’. This comment resounded heavily on me.
In 2012 I was one of only three paramedics who made entry into the Sandy Hook School with law enforcement officers. We spent pretty much the entire day in that building, with those who became known as the 26 Sandy Hook Angels. Needless to say, that day changed my life forever, as it did other people experiencing similar situations, like Todd Blyleven.
As Todd spoke, his was a “relatable story” to me. I vividly live with, not remember, many of the thoughts, feelings, and frustrations Todd has as well. While some may think it unhealthy to reflect upon our own personal traumas as Todd spoke, I thought it different, that I was in the presence of someone who was able to relate their story, to one very personal to me.
While Todd’s journey towards recovery will never be over, I was very impressed with his openness, his honestly, and his understanding of resiliency, and the importance of seeking help, and helping others. If you get a chance to listen to Todd speak, and the honor of meeting him, you will not only be impressed with him, but his words and wisdom will stick with you as he delivers his “relatable story”.
